Powerful, flicker-free, daylight-balanced movie lighting used to cost a small fortune; forcing amateurs everywhere to raid garden centres and DIY stores in search of more affordable options. Not anymore. As with flash gear, the options available for photographers and videographers working with continuous lighting have evolved massively in recent years, largely due to the increasing sophistication and affordability of LED technology. Now brands such as Godox have brought a range of bright and versatile continuous lighting to the market, making it easier and cheaper than ever to put together a comprehensive continuous lighting rig for either filmmaking or stills work.

 

Litemons LED6R / LED6Bi

Litemons LEDs are Godox’s pocket-sized lights catering to beginners who are looking for easy to use, budget-friendly lighting. Godox has created two options: a Bi-Colour (LED6Bi) and an RGB (LED6R) version. These lights are compact and lightweight, weighing in at just 100g and 110g respectively and are great for vlogging, live-streaming, film-making and even selfie lighting.

The LED6Bi offers adjustable colour temperature from 3200K to 6500K in 9 steps and brightness adjustment from 0-100% brightness in 10 steps. The LED6R RGB variant has 36,000 RGB colours to choose from and features CCT mode giving you colour temperature adjustability from 3200K-6500K. The LED6R also comes with in-built presets like ambulance, lightning and many more.

The Litemons series lights have inbuilt lithium batteries that can run at full power for 2 hours or up to 10 hours on lower outputs. The lights can be charged via a USB-C cable making it convenient for photographers and videographers on the go.

LA150D / LA150BI / LA200D / LA200BI

The Litemons range is the newest in Godox's LED range. The new LA150 and LA200 are compact and comparable in output to Godox's SL150 and SL200 lights. You'll notice two versions of each light, one as a Bi-colour (BI) and the other as a Daylight (D) version.

The Godox Litemons LA150D Daylight and LA200D Daylight LED Lights look almost identical but have subtle differences. For instance, when the included Bowens mount reflector is added, the LUX rating at one metre on the LA150D is approximately 84,800 Lux. Whereas the LA200D excels at 101,000, making it the better choice if a higher output is required. The same output strength is consistent with the Godox Litemons LA150BI Bi-Colour LED Light, and LA200BI Bi-Colour LED Light.

 

There are noticeable feature differences when comparing the 150D and 150BI side by side. Colour temperature operates at 5600K on the Daylight model, whereas the Bi-Colour offers a Colour Temperature range from 2800 to 5600K. The latter also offers two additional lighting effects, a total of 11 looks due to the larger range of colour temperature. This feature set is the same for the higher-end LA200D and LA200BI models.

Godox is renowned for its ability to control LED lights remotely via its smartphone app; all of these lights live up to the promise. On either the light or remotely via the Bluetooth pairing, users can operate in output from 0-100% brightness or easily select from the range of special effects. Creative control is also welcome by adopting a host of Bowens accessories or umbrellas, making either of these lights ideal for YouTubers, live streamers, content creators, and more.

 

 

WL8P Waterproof LED Light

The Godox Waterproof LED Light WL8P is a pocketable, waterproof LED with a working depth of 10m and a waterproofing rating of IP68. It features a 10W power output with a bi-colour colour temperature range of 2700-8000K. Intended for professional action photographers, videographers and divers, the Godox Waterproof LED Light WL8P boasts a CRI rating of 96 and a TLCI of 97. WL4B

Powered by a 1500 mAh battery, the Godox WL4B Waterproof LED Light can output a 5600K daylight at full brightness for 80 minutes. Its design and feature set is ideal for filmmakers and videographers needing to fill light in locations that may compromise other lights. This Godox compact light can go almost anywhere thanks to its durability and waterproof design, enabling it to go to depths of around 100'.
Charging the Godox WL4B Waterproof LED Light is a simple process, especially if you have a backup battery that powers USB devices. You'll find a handy USB Type-C cable included, and once plugged in, it only takes 1 hour and 40 minutes to charge fully. For creatives wanting to explore lighting controls, you're in luck. Godox has included 13 lighting effects, including, Lighting, Flash, Broken Bulb, TV, and SOS.

Users can control the LED light with the optional Godox Light App, which connects via Bluetooth to a smart device. R1

Godox R1 is a round, palm-sized portable LED light that can be set to any colour on the RGB scale you wish. The unit itself is magnetic, allowing you to attach it to metal surfaces without the need for a lighting stand (although it has a thread for this too). The R1 can also be used with the brand’s range of magnetic modifiers, further adding to the light’s versatility.

The R1’s built-in rechargeable lithium battery will keep it shining on full power for about 90 minutes of continuous use. The controls are super easy to use; a combination of button and dial operation allowing quick changes to output, colour temperature, and other features.



Speaking of “other features”, photographic equipment that comes with a range of built-in “effects” usually rings alarm bells; invariably promising a bunch of tacky and unusable gimmicks. But surprisingly, many of the effects built into the R1 are actually pretty good, and will likely be of genuine interest to filmmakers and videographers; from the flickering glow of candlelight to a TV screen, cop car, fireworks, or a faulty neon tube. You can even set the R1 to pulsate in time with the rhythm of music (or your voice).

Creative photographers and filmmakers will no doubt come up with a million uses for a small and flexible LED light such as this. Indeed everyone should keep a couple of R1s in their camera bag just for throwing a little light into the background or foreground of a shot. On bigger productions, however, where more complicated and luxurious lighting setups may be required, a dozen or so R1s would be a fantastic way of building up subtle, atmospheric lighting across an entire set.

 

 

C5R

The C5R KNOWLED RGB LED is an ultra-compact unit that can sit on your camera or light stand. Use it as a fill light or add an accent light to a backdrop. Its Correlated Colour Temperature is adjustable from 2500 to 8500K, and the brightness can be varied from 0 to 100% by turning the DIM adjust dial at 1% increments. Using the onboard controls or Bluetooth app, you can adjust the lighting intensity or change the LED lights to any colour on the rainbow.

The Godox C5R KNOWLED is known as a ‘Creative Light’ because there are 39 modes to simulate effects such as lasers, lightning bolts, fireworks, fire trucks, police cars, fires and candle flames. You can even jump straight into any of the RGB colours and fine-tune the hue, saturation, and intensity. When using the built-in controls, a well-designed LCD panel allows you to see which mode you’re in.
Even though the CR5 has a ¼ inch thread and a cold shoe mount at its base, many videographers use the magnetic backing to attach it to the side of a metal light stand. C7R/C10R

Ring72

A new addition to the Godox family is the RING72, great for Macro, Close-up, Cosmetic and even dental photography. The RING72 has 72 daylight balanced 5600K LEDs that enhances the quality of images when in close up shots. Not only that but the RING72s high output LED lights are also great for video use as well.
Its circular feature compliments skin and illuminates colour in a flattering way, avoiding any harsh shadows and also gives subjects that infamous ring catchlight.
The RING72 is also very easy to use. It aims to be user friendly especially for beginners. It turns on with a push of a button and you can adjust brightness easily by rotating the dial. S30

The Godox S30 is a sturdily-built daylight-balanced LED video light. Running off the mains, the S30 gives out 30 Watts of attractive lighting. However, the S30 can also be used as a portable lighting unit, either via a USB power-bank or coupled with a separate Lithium-ion battery. At which point it will provide a reduced output of 10 Watts.

Simple to use and featuring minimal controls - essentially just for altering power and focus - the S30 really comes into its own when combined with Godox’s wide range of compatible light modifiers and accessories (below). S60

When you need variable beam focus and flexible control and power options, the Godox S60 LED Focusing light is ideal. The light has an expansive spread of focusable light from 6 to 55 degrees, which means it can be used as a hair light, accent light, a long-throw fixture, or a selective lighting tool. The barndoors included allow you to shape the light even more, and at 55 degrees this light will easily fill a silk or light a group.

The S60 has a consistent colour temperature of 5600K, and is dimmable from 0-100%. Adjustments can be made locally on the fixture, or controlled from a console via onboard DMX, wirelessly, or with a smartphone app. There is also an optional remote controller that gives a range of 50m.

The aspheric optical lens gives the S60 CRI/TLCI ratings of 96/97, and the light intensity of the focused spot gives an increase of around 4 stops of light from the flood setting. The separate control box of the S60 supports AC power, or an optional V-mount battery for shooting on location.

FL60 / FL100 / FL150S / FL150R

Godox’s FL range of lights is essentially lightweight, flexible, LED-covered mats. Fold them, roll them, sculpt them, slide them into tight spaces; these pliable light-banks are capable of bringing illumination to even the most gloomy and forgotten nooks and crannies. Combine with a softbox and grid-set for an extremely slim soft-lighting solution, and then control output and colour temperature via one of Godox’s wireless triggers, or from the Godox app on your phone via Bluetooth.



Multiple units can be attached together, allowing you to build up an entire wall of light if necessary. Power comes either via a mains adapter or a portable Lithium battery; so the FlexLight range is as good for photography and video on location as it is for studio work.

 

 

FH50R/FH50Bi

The Godox FH50R RGB LED Flexible Light Panel is a lightweight, bendable lighting solution for tight and unconventional spaces. It has RGB, daylight, and tungsten modes with accurate colour rendering. The FH50BI version has tungsten and daylight colour modes. Both lights were designed with creativity in mind and have preinstalled light effects like television, flash, lightning, candles, welding, and more. They can be controlled wirelessly through Bluetooth and the Godox Light app or locally via the onboard interface. The package for each light includes an AC adapter, cable, support mount, and carry bag for convenience.

 

 

SLB60

The SLB60 is a daylight-balanced, battery-powered LED that produces a very bright light and is super simple to use. Although the SLB60 is essentially a lightweight, portable version of the mains-powered SL60 (above), it actually comes in the same housing as the AD600 flash unit, and even uses the same Lithium battery and charger. This means that if you have already bought into the Godox flash system, you’ll be able to swap over your accessories. Better still, if any of your modifiers are Bowens-mount, then you’ll be pleased to learn that you will be able to use these with the SLB60 too. The SLB60 has its own extension head, in the form of the AD-H600, and can use the same AC adapter as the AD600BM/AD600B, the AD-AC.

 

 
 

VL150/VL200/VL300

The VL series of daylight-balanced video lights comprise the top of the Godox continuous lighting range in terms of power. Making them serious tools for serious filmmakers. Reflecting this, the lights feature an exceptionally rugged design and are notable for a rotating yoke; making precise positioning of the lights a total breeze.

Lightweight and compact, the VL series can be purchased at three different power levels, thus suiting a variety of needs; 150 W, 200 W, and 300 W. The units can be dimmed from 0%-100% at 1% increments - either using the bundled remote or via the Godox app. As with many other Godox products, the VL lights will take Bowens-mount accessories.

 

 

VL150II/ VL200II/ VL300II

The Godox VLII series offers a worthwhile upgrade to the original version of continuous lights. The off-light controller means you can mount the lights as high as necessary without climbing a ladder to change the settings. The original VL series didn’t have special effects available, but these newer versions contain eight built-in lighting effects, including storm, broken bulb, and TV. Each light has dual mounting points, excellent build quality, and a padded carry bag is supplied, which makes it easy to transport.

As a budget-friendly key light, the Godox VL150II 150W is often snapped up by videographers, but it is handy for photographers too. It has accurate colour rendition and enough brightness for use in a small studio. Whether making YouTube videos, filming interviews, shooting corporate headshots or doing product photography, this daylight-balanced light source covers all your needs. The VL150II is suitable for small studios and especially useful for product photography. For portrait photography, you may prefer the Godox VL-200II LED, as the extra power means you can take it back further from the subject for full-length shots. You can use this light in larger studios for video interviews and photographing portraits, and doing product shots. The VL-300II is suitable for outdoor event photography as it has enough wattage to overpower shadows caused by strong sunlight. It’s also valuable for larger studios where you can photograph groups of people and do fashion shots.

 

 

LC30D/30Bi

The Godox LC30D Litemons Daylight Tabletop LED Light is a great choice for those looking for a powerful and versatile LED light. With a colour temperature of 5600K, it is perfect for use in both studio and daylight conditions, especially at a max power output of 33W. With diffusion accessories, the output illumination is softened with reduced shadows making it ideal for product photography in a smaller studio environment. It also has an adjustable beam angle that is dimmable, making it easy to control the spread of light, so you can adjust the intensity to suit your needs. The LC30D also can be powered using a DC adapter or two NP-F970 batteries (optional), making it a useful asset regardless of your location.

LC500

The Godox LC500 is a powerful dual-colour light-stick that falls somewhere between Kino Flo’s classic range of tubular cinema lights and, well, a lightsaber. In practice, this means that it combines the ease of use of a Kino Flo LED bank - and its handy adjustable blinker system - with portable-power and a handle.
The unit offers a daylight-balanced bank on one side, and tungsten on the other, making it effectively a two-in-one portable lighting solution without the need to pack cumbersome correction gels. However, keep in mind that although the output power of the LC500 is entirely adjustable, the Kelvin levels of the two sides are not. So you either get full daylight or full tungsten; but nothing in between.

 

Bright, lightweight, and very sturdy, the LC500 gives off twice the light of the similarly specced Westcott Icelight 2 at full power. The built-in battery takes under two and a half hours to reach full charge, and will then be good for powering the light at full output for nearly as long again.
The LC500’s barn doors are removable; either so you can place them on the other side of the unit, or simply use the light without them (when doing battle with “The Dark Side”, for example). As we’ve come to expect from Godox products, the LC500’s limited controls are adjustable via wireless remote. Meaning that once you’ve grown tired of playing Luke Skywalker, you can place the light on a stand and control it from a distance.
 

LC500 Mini / LC500R Mini

Compared to the original LC500, the LC500 Mini is a smaller, 45cm light wand. It has an attachable battery pack that doubles as a handle so you can position it exactly where it’s needed for 20 watts of extra light. Included are barn doors to shape the field of light. It has 11 lighting effects to simulate different scenarios. Its variable colour temperature from 2500 to 8500K allows you to match the ambient atmosphere. TL60

UL150 Silent LED Video Light

Most continuous lights use built-in cooling fans to avoid overheating. If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to experience spontaneously combusting lighting gels on a shoot, you’ll know why; naked flames on set will not impress the client!
Of course, the problem with fans is that they tend to make a whole lot of noise. Not a major problem for stills shoots, but a total nightmare for filmmakers and videographers. Enter Godox’s UL150 LED video light. Daylight-balanced at 5600K, this 150W LED video light employs a fan-less heat dissipation system to permit completely silent operation. No longer will fear of fan-noise dictate the positioning of your lights.

In order to reduce the risk of overheating the head, the UL150 is controlled by a separate remote unit. Using either the supplied control box, the RC-A5II remote, or the Godox Photo App, you can adjust output; dimming from 100-0% in stepless increments. SL150III/ SL200III/ SL300III

Inbuilt fans keep studio lights cool, but their noise is distracting when recording tutorials or interviews. The updated versions of Godox’s SL series of lights are noticeably quieter than early models of continuous lighting, but switching to silent makes them even better. Silent mode turns off the fan which causes light output to decrease by approximately one-third to avoid overheating, but it’s still bright enough for filming, making your broadcasting more professional.

The Godox SL150III 5600K 150W LED video light is solidly constructed (mainly metal) and has 150 watts of COB LED with improved colour accuracy that is locked at daylight temperature. When filming outdoors and you need extra light to overcome direct sunlight on your subject, choose the Godox SL300III 5600K 300W LED video light. ML30/ ML30bi (and accessories)

ML60 LED Portable Light

The Godox ML60 is a lightweight, and highly portable LED light that will run off either mains power or a Lithium battery. And despite being rated at 60W, this little gem of a light actually packs a very powerful punch.

Power can be adjusted steplessly using a rear dimmer knob, or controlled remotely via a wireless 32-channel, 16-group receiver. Daylight balanced at 5600K, the ML60 provides bright and stable output for accurate colour and consistency. Indeed, the ML60 comes with the assurance of a CRI/TLCI rating of 96/97.

As with many of Godox’s more recent LED models, standard operation results in only minimal fan noise due to advanced dissipation technology. Alternatively, the light can be switched over to full silent mode for when totally noise-free operation is a must.

M200 D/Bi

The Godox Knowled M200D Daylight LED Light is an ideal lighting tool for YouTubers, streamers, photographers, and filmmakers who require consistent lighting. The Daylight model has a colour temperature of 5600K, ensuring skin tones and fabric reflects true colour regardless of the environment. Compared with the similarly weighted Godox M200BI Knowled Bi-Colour LED Video Light, you'll find few differences beyond an expandable colour temperature range of 2800K to 6500K.

Consistent with higher-end M300 and M600 models, these two M200 LED lights offer all the versatility and flexibility of remote 2.4G wireless control via Godox's Bluetooth pairing app. Now, if you have more than one light in the studio, you'll find it far more efficient to set the brightness from 0-100% via the app rather than walking around the studio setting up each light.

A series of special effects can also be adopted from the rear of the M200D or M200BI models. These include flash, lightning, TV, and broken bulb. The Godox Knowled M300D 300W Daylight LED Video Light and Godox M300BI Knowled Bi-Colour LED Light sit in the middle of Godox's M-range between the M200 and M600 models. As a similar-sized unit, you can expect a maximum power output of 330W, 100W more than the M200 LED Light and 410W less than the M600.

Based on the output power, 0-100% dimmable functionality and wireless control via Godox's app, photographers and filmmakers will be drawn to these Continuous LEDs if they have a medium to large studio to light. Based on the broad set of functions and excellent output, we recommend using either of these lights for Twitch, gaming, YouTube, photography or filmmaking.

When buying the light, know there is a slight difference in models. The Godox Knowled M300D generates a 5600K daylight temperature, whereas the M300BI Knowled Bi-Colour goes beyond this to produce a colour temperature of 2800K to 6500K. So if you want more creative control with lighting, then the Bi-Colour will be your best choice; aside from this, both lights are almost identical.
